On August 17, 2024, the island of Zanzibar hosted its first-ever Tech Summit at the Pavilion in Fumba Town. The event represented a significant milestone for the "Silicon Zanzibar" public-private initiative, which was launched in 2022 with the ambitious goal of transforming the island into a technology hub for Africa.

The Silicon Zanzibar Initiative

Silicon Zanzibar aims to attract digital-first companies and global tech talent to the island through a compelling package of incentives. These include 10-year corporate tax exemptions and streamlined work visa processes for technical professionals, making it one of the most attractive tech destinations in East Africa.

The initiative has already begun bearing fruit. In November 2023, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras established its first international campus in Zanzibar, bringing world-class STEM education to the island. Princeton University has also partnered with the African School of Economics to deliver courses in STEM and social sciences, further strengthening Zanzibar's educational infrastructure.

A Day of Innovation and Connection

The summit featured a full day of talks, workshops, and networking opportunities. Speakers included Daniel Meller, a digital product creator, and Richmond Ohalewe, a product designer from Nigeria, among other industry leaders from across the continent.
